A 47-year-old pilot in a Wisconsin air show was killed after his plane spun out of control and crashed in a wooded site located next to Stevens Point Municipal Airport.
“The 47-year-old pilot was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Sgt. Tony Babi of the Stevens Point Police, The Telegraph reported.
He said the pilot’s name was being withheld, pending notification of family. He also added the plane didn’t catch fire when it crashed.
“Didn’t see any smoke or fire from the scene, and the officers when they arrived confirmed it did not burst into flames,” Sgt. Babi said, The Telegraph reported.
The pilot was performing maneuvers when his craft plummeted to the ground about 1,000 feet away from the airport.
“He was doing his routine,” witness Steven Marquardt said, The Telegraph reported, “and it looked like he was coming straight down right down behind the tower out in the field. Everybody saying he’s gotta pull out, gotta pull out, and he just landed dead. It appeared he went out in the woods, there was no smoke, didn’t see a fire, anything like that. People just kind of looked around, what’s going on, and the guy over here’s announcing: ’I think he’s OK. I think he landed there somewhere.’ Nothing, he never pulled out of it.”
