Donald Sterling, the embattled owner of the Los Angeles Clippers who shocked national headlines for racial comments he was overheard making to his female friend on audio, took a time-out from the basketball scene to to go to church services in his home city — at a facility that’s attended primarily by black people.
Mr. Sterling said to KNBC-TV that he stopped in to the Praises of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles as a show of support.
He also said the service was “beautiful” and that he was warmly welcomed, CBC News reported. Pastor J. Benjamin Hardwick reportedly said his flock was praying for him, the media outlet said.
Mr. Sterling was fined $2.5 million and banned from the NBA for life after an audiotape surfaced of him telling his female friend, V. Stiviano, that she shouldn’t bring blacks with her to basketball games or post pictures of them on her Instagram account.
