OPINION:
President Obama has created yet another dilemma that, in my opinion, could have been avoided if he’d left a small military force in Iraq to keep the peace and deter terrorists (“Rep. Steny Hoyer: Congress ’certainly’ should consider airstrikes in Iraq,” Web, June 17).
Instead of capitalizing on the sacrifice that our military men and women made by defeating a dictator who killed thousands of his own people, Mr. Obama ran out of the country like a dog with his tail between his legs. In doing so, the factions that have been at each other’s throats for centuries were given free rein to pick up where they left off.
Mr. Obama said he is considering giving support to Iraq against the terrorists who invaded that country because it’s now in our interest to do so. The only problem with that: Iran has put troops on the ground to support Iraq against the terrorist insurgents, which brings up another big issue. Iran is a sworn enemy of the United States. If we give it air support, we would in effect be giving aid to our enemy, which is treasonous.
According to our Constitution “treason against the United States shall consist in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.” If Mr. Obama aids the Iranians by protecting them from the terrorists, it is a treasonous act, which opens him up to impeachment under Article II, Section 4.
As far as I’m concerned as a 100 percent disabled Marine Vietnam veteran and former law-enforcement officer, Mr. Obama shouldn’t be allowed to make any more plans regarding Iraq as long as those plans depend on Iran.
