Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid isn’t taking back comments he made during a private fundraiser this month in which he called Colorado’s Republican Senate candidate “a real loser.”
Mr. Reid said he didn’t regret insulting Rep. Cory Gardner, who is in a hotly contested race to unseat Democratic Sen. Mark Udall, Politico reported.
“I regret a lot of things I’ve said over the years, but Mark Udall is a fine candidate,” the Democrat said Tuesday. “He’s ahead of all the polls I’ve seen in Colorado, and I’ve seen a lot of them, and he’s going to win his re-election.”
His response comes after headlining a June 5 fundraiser on behalf of Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Democratic Senate candidate in Kentucky.
“Each day that goes by, Mark Udall is ahead by more in Colorado cause this guy he’s running against … is a real loser,” Mr. Reid, Politico reported.
Mr. Gardner told the paper that he wasn’t going to let the comments get to him.
“Harry Reid seems to be under a lot of stress these days,” he said. “I intend to forgive these insults and will welcome his input when he is minority leader.”
