Praising Colombia’s efforts to improve human rights and end ongoing conflicts with armed rebels, Vice President Joseph R. Biden on Wednesday described the South American country as “a nation transformed” and vowed that the U.S. will work closely with newly re-elected Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.
At meeting a Bogota, Mr. Biden said the Obama administration supports ongoing peace talks between the Colombian government and Revolutionary Armed Forced of Colombia.
“In war and in peace, Mr. president, we stand with Colombia … I know there’s a lot left to do and I have absolute confidence in your determination,” the vice president told Mr. Santos during brief public remarks.
Mr. Biden also said Colombia now has “a real leadership position” in South America, and is an “example for the western hemisphere.”
