Emergency responders on Tuesday were searching for survivors in the wake of two massive tornadoes that tore through northern Nebraska, leaving two dead and 16 in critical condition.
“We’re still digging people out,” said Sanford Goshom, the emergency manager in Stanton County, CNN reported.
Damages included the destruction of three-quarters of the town of Pilger — home to about 350 — and substantial damages to nearby Wisner, Stanton and Pender, Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger said, to CNN.
The death count rose between Monday and Tuesday to two — including a 5-year-old boy in Pilger.
The tornadoes were so formidable they actually straddled a state highway as they blew across the land, said one witness, CNN reported.
“It was terribly wide,” Marianne Pesotta told the local CNN affiliate KETV. “I drove east. I could see how bad it was. I had to get out of there.”
