OPINION:
It should come as no surprise that at this late date the Internal Revenue Service reveals that two years’ worth of Lois Lerner’s emails to officials in other departments of the government have disappeared (“IRS says it lost key Lerner emails,” Web, June 13). This is the “Chicago way.”
Another especially egregious example of it involved President Obama’s favorite baseball team, the Chicago White Sox. Just before the trial of the Chicago players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series, key evidence, including signed confessions, mysteriously disappeared from the Cook County Courthouse. Absent this evidence, all eight defendants were acquitted after the jurors deliberated for less than three hours. They were punished only by being banned from baseball by the new commissioner of baseball, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who couldn’t allow this stain to compromise the integrity of the game.
Too bad that there’s no one around in Washington today with the power to overcome the “Chicago way” — or the willingness to use it.
