Two top Republicans said Tuesday that in addition to Lois G. Lerner’s emails, the IRS appears to also have lost records from six other agency employees involved in the tea party targeting scandal.
Reps. Dave Camp and Charles Boustany Jr., who are respectively the chairmen of the House Ways and Means Committee and a key oversight subcommittee, said one of those employees whose records have been lost was Nicole Flax, the chief of staff for the acting IRS commissioner.
“Even when the IRS does admit something, they are not fully honest with us. Despite their attempt to bury the missing Lerner emails on page 15 of a 27 page letter that arrived late Friday, we now know documents from other central figures, like Nikole Flax, are missing,” the two lawmakers said in a statement. “The fact that Ms. Flax was a frequent visitor to the White House and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building only raises more questions.”
The IRS announced some of the email problems in a letter sent to Congress last Friday, when most of Washington was already shutting down for a summer weekend — prompting protests from Republicans who say the agency was trying to bury the news.
The agency said a computer hard drive crashed caused many of Ms. Lerner’s emails from 2009 through 2011 to be lost.
