Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was imprisoned by the Taliban and Haqqani network in Afghanistan and Pakistan five years and has been at a hospital in Germany for the past two weeks, will return to the United States on Friday, a senior Pentagon official said.

By Friday night, Sgt. Bergdahl should be relocated to an Army post in San Antonio, according to the official. Sgt. Bergdahl has been undergoing a three-phase recovery and reintegration process — the third phase of which will allow for the sergeant to reconnect with his family.

Sgt. Bergdahl has been at the center of intense media coverage of the controversial five-for-one trade that freed the from the hands of his Taliban and Haqqani network captors in Afghanistan.

Under the trade, the Obama administration agreed to release five former senior Taliban commanders from imprisonment at Guantanamo Bay. The trade took place on May 31.
