A 2-year-old boy was shot in the head and killed in his home after his father fired a gun through the window while arguing with the child’s mother, police in Cleveland said.

Derrice Alexander, who was standing on a landing during the domestic dispute, was pronounced dead at the hospital, CBS reported.

The mother, meanwhile, wasn’t hurt.

They have another child, age 1, who wasn’t hurt during the incident.

After firing the weapon, the father reportedly tossed the gun into a trash can and fled the scene. Police found him a short time later and took him into custody but have yet to file formal charges.

Among the charges they may file is one related to guns: Police Chief Calvin Williams said in CBS that the suspected shooter is a convicted felon and should not have been in possession of a gun.
