Rep. Michael Michaud, Maine Democrat, said Wednesday his proven track record of working across the aisle in Congress will help him succeed in the Maine governor’s race this fall.
Mr. Michaud won the Democrat gubernatorial nomination in the state’s primary Tuesday. When asked about his ability to work with GOP lawmakers, the ranking member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee pointed to his relationship with committee chairman, Rep. Jeff Miller, Florida Republican.
“I’m the only candidate in this race who has a proven track record of working across the aisle,” Mr. Michaud said on MSNBC.
Some have said that the veterans affairs committees are some of the most bipartisan in Washington and Mr. Michaud and Mr. Miller have largely been on the same page during the VA scandal, including a unanimous vote to subpoena VA witnesses last month.
Mr. Michaud said his service in Congress has given him a strong base in the state already with voters across the parties.
“I feel really good about the enthusiasm out there among not only Democrats and independents, but moderate Republicans,” he said.
