Rep. Steve Israel, New York Democrat, said Wednesday that Democrats are trying to decide whether or not to fund the party’s challenger to David Brat, who ousted Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the Virginia’s 7th District GOP primary.
“There was nobody in Washington or most of anyplace else I know who believed Eric Cantor was going to lose this last night,” chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee told MSNBC. “So we’re making a clear-eyed decision and accessing our strategic actions today.”
He called Mr. Brat’s upset a “10 on the political Richter scale” and noted that the victory shows just how far to the right the Republican party has turned.
He said the Republicans will likely delve into a leadership battle for the rest of the year, while Democrats continue to focus on the priorities of working-class Americans.
“The next five months is going to be mayhem by the Republican caucus,” he said. “And that will not serve the American people well.”
