Dr. Monica Wehby, an Oregon Republican who’s challenging Sen. Jeff Merkley for his Senate seat, tried to shake the stalking charges that surfaced about her in recent in recent weeks: That just shows I’m uber-persistent.
Ms. Wehby made the comments about police reports that detail how she showed up unannounced and uninvited at a former boyfriend’s home — several times — and then actually hit another ex with a pad of paper, Talking Points Memo reported.
Her response: That just shows I’m “a very committed, determined person” with a “very strong conviction,” she said, TPM reported.
“I think that the thing to learn from that is that I am a person who will stand up for what I believe in,” she said, The Associated Press reported. “I’m a person who doesn’t easily back down. I will fight for Oregonians with very strong conviction. I’m a very committed, determined person.”
One of Ms. Wehby’s exes has outright accused her of stalking. Another — her ex-husband — said in police reports that she’s guilty of “ongoing harassment,” TPM reported.
But to Ms. Wehby, that’s all stuff and nonsense. She said she’s good friends with both the men.
“Nobody is perfect,” she said, TPM reported. “Nobody wants to have every single aspect of their life scrutinized. But you know, I kind of like people who aren’t perfect — they’re easier for me to relate to.”
Ms. Wehby also pointed accusing fingers at Mr. Merkley, saying he was launching unsubstantiated and unfair attacks against her — even though TPM reported that the Democratic incumbent has not yet commented on the police reports.
“I think he knows that he can’t win on the issues,” she said. “And that’s the first thing you do … attack the messenger when you can’t win on the issues.”
