Sen. Claire McCaskill, Missouri Democrat, says the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack on a U.S. compound in Benghazi is a “tragedy” no one feels more acutely than former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
“Certainly, it’s a tragedy,” Mrs. McCaskill, who has endorsed Mrs. Clinton for president in 2016, said on “Fox News Sunday.” “And it is a tragedy, I think, that no one feels more acutely than Hillary Clinton.”
“She knows it was on her watch, there were lost Americans,” Mrs. McCaskill continued. “But the point is…there has been dozens of hearings. There has been thousands of pages of testimony. Hillary Clinton has appeared in front of House committees and Senate committees answering any question that any Republican wanted to put to her.”
Mrs. McCaskill’s appearance comes on the heels of reports on a chapter from Mrs. Clinton’s soon-to-be-released book in which Mrs. Clinton writes that people who “exploit” the tragedy over and over as a political tool minimize the sacrifice of people who have served the country.
A House select committee has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, which claimed the lives of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens.
“The notion that there is somehow something else that can be gained here other than politics just defies common sense,” Mrs. McCaskill said. “I think anybody looking at this rationally understands with this tragedy, we should now focus on how we make sure it never happens again.”
