President Obama — who famously and recently vowed to take up his pen to run executive orders around a slow-moving Congress — has now turned to his writing tablet for another political cause: The surging Israeli-Palestinian violence.
Tuesday, Mr. Obama’s plea for peace appeared in the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz.
He wrote, NBC News reported: “All parties must protect the innocent and act with reasonableness and restraint, not vengeance and retribution. While walls and missile defense systems can help protect against some threats, true safety will only come with a comprehensive negotiated settlement.”
Mr. Obama’s words appeared in print the very same day Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered a massive rocket assault against Hamas — which had bombarded the Jewish nation with 80 of its own rockets on Monday — and at the same time called in more ground troops to active duty.
“Refusing to compromise or cooperate with one another won’t do anything to increase security for either the Israeli or the Palestinian people,” Mr. Obama wrote.
Israel’s defense minsters said the Tuesday aggression, dubbed Operation Protective Edge, was aimed to “stop the terror Israel’s citizens face on a daily basis,” NBC News said.
