OPINION:
In “Is the president incompetent or lawless?” (Web, July 30), columnist Andrew P. Napolitano is guilty of what I call Reagan sycophancy. He writes that Jimmy Carter asserted numerous regulations over the trucking and airline industries, regulations that were removed by President Reagan. Nonsense. It was Sen. Ted Kennedy who spearheaded the deregulation of the airline and trucking industries, and the legislation was signed by President Carter in 1980.
We libertarians and conservatives attribute too much to Mr. Reagan. He was a good president and enjoyed luck during the 1980s, but he did not have to deal with a collapse of the global financial system. What we are dealing with now is the fallout of this trauma. Perhaps Mr. Napolitano can tell the public which advanced industrial economy has had continued growth of better than 2 percent since 2007-2008.
