Authorities have arrested one — and still seek another — in connection with an investigation into a drone that was filled with phones, marijuana and tobacco that crashed outside a South Carolina maximum-security prison.
Brenton Lee Doyle, 28, made a court appearance Wednesday for charges of attempting to introduce contraband into a prison and for possession of the drug flunitrazopam — the muscle relaxant better known by its street name of “roofies,” Reuters reported.
The drone wreckage outside the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, S.C., was found in April, and authorities have since been trying to find the suspects who flew it.
“The technology is getting better, and we have to figure out different ways to fight back,” said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Stephanie Givens, Reuters reported.
Illegal cells phones have proven a particular problem for prisons around the nation.
