The U.S. Embassy in Algiers has alerted its staff of a possible terrorist attack over the holiday weekend.
“As of June 2014 an unspecified terrorist group may have been considering attacks in Algiers, possibly in the vicinity of a U.S. branded hotel,” the State Department said Wednesday.
Embassy employees were told to avoid U.S.-owned hotels through the Fourth of July weekend.
While acts of terror perpetrated by Islamic radicals in the region have dropped off in recent years, groups affiliated with al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb continue to operate in the eastern Kabylie region, Agence France Presse reported.
The last major terrorist attack in Algiers took place in 2007, AFP reported. Twin suicide bombings carried out by al Qaeda at a government building killed 26 people and wounded roughly 180.
