Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh had an interesting observance about the genesis of soccer — one that he described as sure to anger liberals, if only they would face the truth.
The game actually began in 9th-century European towns, where players would kick pig bladders from “one landmark to another,” he said on his Wednesday show.
“If you liberals learn that this game’s origins occurred after brutality to an animal, that the modern soccer ball traces its roots to a pig bladder, animal-abusing white guys, I mean, let’s face it — that’s who started soccer,” Mr. Limbaugh said, Politico reported. “Animal-abusing white guys cared nothing about animal rights, kicking pig bladders, and I’m sure if they ran out of pigs they went and got a cow bladder. One bladder fits all.”
Mr. Limbaugh said he found the U.S.-Belgium World Cup matchup entertaining to watch, spurring his curiosity about the game’s origin.
“The Belgians were on the offense most of the game, but it was close, and it was actually enjoyable,” he said, according to Politico. “so then I said, ’OK, where does this game come from?’”
Mr. Limbaugh’s enjoyment was a much different take than the one offered by fellow conservative talking head Ann Coulter, who said any interest in the game was a “sign of moral decay.”
