OPINION:
No doubt, like many of you, I have moments each week when I wonder if the American people are still falling for the lies and manipulations of the political establishment.
Fortunately, as we enjoy our Fourth of July holiday weekend, I’m grateful to find that the answer is, no.
Two recent polls prove that, not only has our citizenry not been lulled into being sheep, they recognize the damage that’s been done and they know exactly who is to blame: Barack Obama.
Considering what our great nation has been enduring since President Obama took office, it wasn’t unfair for us to wonder if his election (and re-election) were indications of an American people who had decided vague promises of free stuff trumped the freedom the Founders so brilliantly designed.
One of the classic leftist tropes is that the horrible economy, the condition of the world, and the chaos here at home, is simply the “new normal,” and we all better get used to it.
It’s not normal, and if the Democrats thought the American people were going to go gently into their dark night, they’ve got another thing coming.
After years of the mainstream media insisting that Mr. Obama was a unicorn-riding messiah, a new Quinnipiac University Poll shows 33 percent of Americans naming Mr. Obama the worst president since World War II. He came in first among losers.
He even beat out George W. Bush (28 percent), Richard Nixon (13 percent) and Jimmy Carter (8 percent) for the worst spot.
The revelation is not that Mr. Obama is the worst president in the past 69 years, but that the American people recognize it and are willing to say so.
For a malignant narcissist like Mr. Obama, the Quinnipiac poll is devastating. It’s not just that result that’s no doubt leaving a mark on the unthinking Change-Hopers everywhere. Quinnipiac also asked respondents who the best president since World War II was. The winner by double digits — Ronald Reagan at 35 percent.
Obama came in a pathetic fourth, with 8 percent.
Though we may wish that the egoist-in-chief was never elected in the first place, this poll is good news on a couple of fronts. First, it shows that the American people still want to preserve what the Founders intended. By declaring Mr. Obama the worst president since World War II, they’re announcing their rejection of the liberal narrative that America’s best days are behind her, and that our decline is organic.
The notion that this enforced decline was inevitable and irreversible is ridiculous, of course, but it’s what liberals want you to believe. Liberals, you see, view the world through the prism of their own misery. Counter to Mr. Obama’s slogan, their world is always declining, always hopeless. Making sure society reflects their personal pessimism makes them feel like they finally belong, and the torment of their own lives is natural.
After years of watching Mr. Obama bow to the world’s tyrants, after watching him waste our money, create and exploit racial, sexual and gender divisions, spy on us, and lie to our faces, all while refusing to actually govern, the American people realize what they got; namely, swindled.
Rating Mr. Obama so horribly is one thing. His passive-aggressiveness has illustrated just how much damage a person can do by stepping away when courage is required. Mr. Obama seems not just bored with his job, but perhaps he thinks he’s above his job.
The result of a man in the White House who apparently has no respect for the American people is also being recognized. Jennifer Harper, “Inside the Beltway” columnist at The Washington Times, reports, “A massive new Gallup poll released Tuesday has confirmed what tea partyers and other grass-roots folk have warned about in recent years. The sense of freedom appears to be diminished in America, and the nation ranks well down on a list of countries based on how residents report how ’satisfied’ they are with the amount of freedom they enjoy.”
Providing some perspective on exactly what this means, Miss Harper notes, “The U.S. ranks 36th on the roster — behind such countries as Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates and Canada.”
On the surface, this is extremely troubling; but after years of being told Mr. Obama and his gang were their friends, it reveals the American people understand that all that has happened is grave. They get it that National Security Agency spying, Internal Revenue Service targeting, gunrunning to Mexico, the obscenity of Benghazi, the failed economy and a world on fire is unacceptable.
The people are crying out. They know we all deserve more. They know that incompetent, self-obsessed, petty and spiteful leadership doesn’t deserve respect, acquiescence or support.
On this Fourth of July, it’s obvious the Founders’ dreams — and the passions that made the first Independence Day possible — are still alive and well.
