Republicans have a 60 percent chance of taking control of the Senate in mid-term elections this November, up from 54 percent in April, according to number-crunchers at The New York Times.
The Upshot blog’s calculations show that Republicans are most likely to gain six seats, or the minimum they need to get a 51-to-49-seat majority in the upper chamber.
“But we, like many other forecasters, would not be surprised by a gain of anywhere from four to eight seats,” it added.
To craft its latest estimates, Upshot added an online panel from polling firm YouGov to its a collection of polls and collaboration between the New York Times and CBS.
The biggest effect was a movement toward the GOP in Michigan, Georgia and North Carolina, although those shifts were “offset somewhat by positive numbers for Democrats in Colorado and Alaska.”
