Rep. Henry Cuellar, Texas Democrat, said Wednesday that Congress needs to stay in Washington until they pass something to deal with the influx of unaccompanied minors along the United States’ southern border.

“If we don’t finish this by July 31, we should stay here until we get this job done,” Mr. Cuellar said on MSNBC.

A GOP working group, led by Rep. Kay Granger of Texas, on Wednesday unveiled their proposals for tackling the issue, which include deploying the National Guard to the border, accelerating the immigration hearings for certain unaccompanied minors and imposing tougher penalties on human traffickers.

Mr. Cuellar said the proposals mirror legislation he’s introduced along with Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican.

“We can’t leave, back into our districts while this humanitarian crisis is going on,” Mr. Cuellar said. “We have to address this, otherwise [Homeland Security] runs out of money.”
