Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he believes that more classified information on the recent downing of the Malaysian jetliner should be released and that the incident is at least indirectly tied to the Russian government.

“Whether it was the Russians themselves that pulled the trigger or Russian separatists trained by Russians, it’s all in the same, and it all goes back ultimately to Vladimir Putin,” Mr. Chambliss said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Intelligence officials said Tuesday that there was no specific evidence that Russia ordered the shootdown of the plane, which killed all 298 people on board, but stressed the incident was precipitated by ongoing Russian meddling in eastern Ukraine.

“Once you publicly state to the European people, ’this is what Vladimir Putin did,’ I think you’re going to see a groundswell of support coming out of the European people, which will force their leaders to get on board in a much stronger way,” Mr. Chambliss said.
