Ukainian authorities reportedly sent in military tanks to try and take back the rebel-held stronghold of Donestsk from Russian separatists on Monday.
This would be the first major attack since the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17. One separatist leader, Sergei Kavtaradze, said the fighting early Monday erupted near the railway station in the city’s boundaries, NBC News reported. He also said four tanks and other armored vehicles were actively trying to bust through the city’s defenses.
A spokesman for Ukraine’s military, meanwhile, confirmed the attack was taking place but refused to comment on any troop movements into the city, NBC News reported.
“The active phase of the anti-terrorist operation is continuing,” said Vladyslav Seleznyov, in the NBC News report.
