A spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is “looking into” a claim from the militant wing of Hamas that it captured an Israeli soldier during fighting early Sunday.

“It could just be Hamas bravado,” Mark Regev said on CNN’s “New Day.” “We’re looking into it — we don’t underestimate Hamas.”

“Hamas has built a formidable military machine with these rockets that they can shoot at the center of our country at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, that network of tunnels under the Gaza Strip, there’s a whole subterranean terror world there in Gaza,” he said. “So we take the Hamas threat very seriously.”

At least 508 Palestinians and 20 Israelis have died during the approximately two weeks of fighting between Israel and Hamas as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon were heading to Cairo in an effort to jump-start stalled case-fire talks, the AP reported Monday.
