Sen. Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, predicted victory Monday in his closely watched Senate race against Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes and acknowledged he has a bit of a target on his back.

“We’re going to to win,” he said. “It’s a big race. You know, when you’re the leader of one of the parties in the Senate you’re a big target for the other side. Every crazy liberal in the country knows who I am, and they’re sending money to my opponent.”

Ms. Lundergan Grimes actually outraised Mr. McConnell in the second quarter, hauling in about $4 million to Mr. McConnell’s $3.1 million. But Mr. McConnell had nearly $10 million in the bank at the end of June compared to Ms. Grimes’ $6.2 million on hand.

Mr. McConnell leads by 1.5 percentage points in RealClearPolitics’ latest average of recent polling on the race.
