A Las Vegas woman died Monday after putting off brain surgery for two months while attempting to gain coverage on Nevada’s balky health exchange, the Las Vegas Sun said.
The newspaper reported that Linda Rolain died of complications following her surgery in mid-May — a procedure that had to wait while she and her husband, Robert, tried to navigate the Silver State Excahnge. In April, they joined a pair of lawsuits against the state and Xerox, the exchange’s main vendor, the Sun said.
Faced with a life-threatening illness, but without insurance, Rolain tried to get enrolled through Obamacare last fall.
After several hurdles, the couple enrolled in January. They sent in a $138 money order for a plan set to start March 1, but the insurer didn’t send her a policy card until May, according to the Sun.
Robert Rolain told the newspaper if his wife had been enrolled sooner, she might still be alive.
“I want the people of Nevada to know that they might have got rid of the cancer with a little chemo and radiation,” he told the Sun last week.
