President Obama shrugged at Republicans who threatened to launch a lawsuit against him to rein in his executive actions, telling them simply that he doesn’t care — go ahead and sue.
“Middle-class families can’t wait for Republicans in Congress to do stuff,” Mr. Obama said at an event in Washington, D.C., reported by CNN. “So sue me.”
The president also dug in and defended his penchant for acting independently via executive orders, saying that he would not “apologize for trying to do something” as Republicans continue to do “nothing,” CNN reported.
Mr. Obama’s harsh words come in response to House Speaker John Boehner’s vow to launching a lawsuit against the president to curb what many Republicans see as an unconstitutional side-stepping of Congress.
On Monday, Mr. Obama pledged to take executive action on immigration. On Tuesday, he vowed more of the same for transportation fixes, decrying the legislative stall of his highway construction spending bill.
“It’s not crazy, it’s not socialism,” Mr. Obama said, during a speech at the Key Bridge on Tuesday aimed at pressing the case for his transportation bill, CNN said. “It’s not the imperial presidency — no laws are broken. We’re just building roads and bridges like we’ve been doing for the last, I don’t know, 50, 100 years. But so far, House Republicans have refused to act on this idea.”
