Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said Friday that Americans are safe to fly following Thursday’s Malaysian Airlines crash, though his organization will continue monitoring the situation in the Ukraine.

“It’s safe to fly to Europe, absolutely,” he said on MSNBC.

A Malaysian Airlines plane was shot down over Ukraine on Thursday, and some experts have wondered if its safe to put American experts on the ground there to help with the investigation. But Mr. Foxx said Transportation Department officials are ready and waiting for the local government to open the crash site.

“It’s obviously a very difficult situation, a horrible tragedy and one that’s going to require international cooperation to figure out and get to the bottom of what happened,” he said.
