Rep. Gregory Meeks, New York Democrat, said Friday that European nations should place sanctions on Russia if it’s found to be responsible for the Malaysian Airlines plan shot down earlier this week.
“The European nations have to come along with the U.S. as Obama just came down with stricter sanctions the other day,” he said on MSNBC. “They should be multilateral sanctions to come down on Russia and make them conform with international standards.”
Mr. Meeks said European nations had previously not placed strong sanctions on Russia because of the countries’ economic ties. By sanctioning Russia, other European countries would end up harming themselves as well.
President Obama has been talking with European leaders, Mr. Meeks said, and will address the nation regarding the downed plane at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
