President Obama said Thursday the reported downing of a commercial airliner in Ukraine “might be a terrible tragedy.”
“The world is watching reports of a downed passenger jet near the Russia-Ukraine border,” Mr. Obama said at an event in Wilmington, Del. “It looks like [it] might be a terrible tragedy.”
He said the U.S. is trying to ascertain whether any Americans were among the passengers, and has offered its assistance to learn what happened.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all the passengers, wherever they call home,” Mr. Obama said.
