Ku Klux Klan members in South Carolina have been distributing fliers and goody bags filled with candies to multiple homes in recent days, hoping to bolster recruitment by capitalizing on growing anger over the porous U.S. border.
“SAVE OUR LAND, JOIN THE KLAN,” the fliers read, accompanied by bags filled with smarties candies and peppermints, WHNS reported.
KRON 4 News tweeted out shortly after seeing the bags: “#KKK uses candy to recruit in South Carolina.” Those who dial the number listed on the package get a voicemail message that states: “If it ain’t white, it ain’t right. White power,” The Wire reported.
The message also talks about how “illegal immigration is destroying America,” the media outlet said.
Several minority homeowners in South Carolina have mistakenly received the bags, too, The Wire reported.
“I mean, we can’t tell who lives in a house, whether they’re black, white, Mexican, gay. We can’t tell that,” Robert Jones, one high-ranking Klan member told WHNS. “And if you were to look at somebody’s house like that, that means you’d be pretty much a racist.”
NBC News reported that the KKK is trying to jumpstart its membership rolls with the furor that’s been created over immigration.
“Save our land” fliers were also recently found in two Atlanta neighborhoods, The Wire reported. And there, one Klan member said the group’s just received 25 new applications and that “the immigration crisis is recruiting members for us,” The Wire reported.
