Conservative Congress members said during a luncheon Tuesday that there’s no chance they will take up Sarah Palin’s call to impeach President Obama, with one joking that “nobody wants a President Joe Biden.”
At their monthly “Conversations with Conservatives” luncheon, six of the House Republican conference’s leading conservatives completely rejected the possibility of impeachment, National Journal reported.
Rep. Raul Labrador said he didn’t believe that the president’s actions were yet worthy of impeachment and joked that “nobody wants a President Joe Biden,” the magazine reported.
“[Mrs. Palin] doesn’t have the burden of leadership right now, and it’s very easy for her to go on Fox News and make statements [when] she doesn’t have to be accountable to anybody but herself,” he said.
Rep. Tim Huelskamp argued that an impeachment proceeding would merely rile up the Democratic base just ahead of the midterm elections.
“So if you want to help the Democrats keep control of the Senate, this would be the right way to do that,” he said.
Of the six members present, Rep. Randy Weber is the only one who said the president should be impeached, but agreed it wouldn’t make sense this late into his term, National Journal reported.
“I don’t think it’s practical that we impeach him right now, but, absolutely, he deserves it,” he said.
In a video posted on her Facebook page last week, Mrs. Palin said Mr. Obama’s “unsecured border crisis” is the last straw, and that voters should demand their politicians support impeachment.
“It is time to impeach,” she said. “We should vehemently oppose any politician and any candidate on the left or the right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment.
“The many impeachable offenses of Barack Obama can no longer be ignored,” she said, citing a list of 25 impeachable offenses. “If after this no one is impeachable, no one is,” she said.
