Sen. Rob Portman said Monday “the math tends for work for Republicans” this year as his party tries to pick up six seats in November and retake the Senate.
“There are more Republicans who are in safe seats and there are more Democrats who are in tough seats,” Mr. Portman, Ohio Republican, told Fox News.
“I think it looks pretty good this year,” he added.
He said it would be a slim GOP majority if it works out, but his optimism is based on the number of Democratic incumbents who face tough races. Those seats are up for grabs in traditionally red or purple states such as Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, New Hampshire and North Carolina.
Mr. Portman is also thrilled with the GOP’s decision to hold its 2016 presidential convention in Cleveland.
“Obviously I have a little bias here, but I think it’s a great choice,” the Ohioan said.

He noted the city is based in a vital swing state and has a diverse population.
“Finally, it’s just a fun town,” Mr. Portman said.
Mr. Portman also responded to Attorney General Eric Holder’s recent claim that “racial animus” plays at least a limited role in public opposition to President Obama.
“I don’t think helps us, I don’t think it takes us in the right direction” in dealing with the ongoing fight against racism, the senator said.
