The Church of England voted Monday to allow the ordination of female bishops for the first time in its history.
The decision was made by a two-thirds majority of the church’s General Synod, the BBC reported.
The decision had the backing of British Prime Minister David Cameron and Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, the Associated Press reported.
The BBC reported that the previous vote on the decision was blocked in 2012 by conservative church members.
The Church of England is part of the Anglican Communion.
