The parents of a D.C. mayoral candidate were victims of a burglary by a man who posed as a cable company employee.
D.C. Council member and Democratic nominee for mayor Muriel Bowser said Friday that her parents were targeted by a man who posed as a cable company employee to gain access to their Northeast D.C. home.
The man went to the home of Joe and Joan Bowser around 9 a.m. Thursday and advised the couple he was from Comcast and was working in the neighborhood to upgrade cable signals, a police report states. The man said he needed to reboot a television in order to complete the upgrade and once inside he stole a cell phone.
Both Joe and Joan Bowser were home at the time of the burglary. Neither were harmed.
“Thankfully, both of my parents are safe, although a bit shaken,” Ms. Bowser said. “This just goes to show that we all need to stay vigilant and ask for identification when someone we do not know, or did not expect, knocks on our door.”
The Metropolitan Police Department released video of the burglar from surveillance cameras at the Bowsers’ home. The man is seen talking with someone on the front porch of the home and then walking around inside the residence.
Police said the burglar also hit a second home located about a block away, in the 1000 block of Crittenden Street in Northeast D.C. From that home, he stole a purse and credit cards.
