A photo of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who spent five years imprisoned by Taliban captors, smiling broadly while standing next to a jihadist is making the rounds on social media.
The similarly smiling bearded man, since identified by the Middle East Research Institute as killed Taliban commander Badruddin Haqqani, has an arm draped about Mr. Bergdahl’s shoulder in the picture, which was posted on Twitter.
Fox News reported the picture was posted on the account of someone with ties to the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
The photo’s accompanying text: “#US Soldier #Bergdahl with Martyr #Taliban Leader Badar’udin Haqqani (RH).”
A separate Twitter poster put up a message that said Taliban members never tortured Sgt. Bergdahl, the New York Post reported.
Sgt. Bergdahl was taken captive after he was mysteriously separated from his unit in Paktika Province. He’s currently in San Antonio, receiving medical care at a military facility.

Some in his unit charge that he actually left his post voluntarily and sought Taliban camaraderie, though Army investigators have recently said no evidence exists of that occurring.
