Veteran defenseman and two-time U.S. Olympian Brooks Orpik has signed a five-year, $27.5 million deal with the Washington Capitals.
Orpik, 33, has spent his entire NHL career with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he worked extensively with new Caps assistant coach Todd Reirden.
Orpik has 132 points (13 goals) and 734 penalty minutes in 703 NHL games and had been an alternate captain for Pittsburgh since 2008.
He was a member of the 2010 and 2014 U.S. Olympic teams.
“We are very excited to welcome Brooks to Washington,” said MacLellan. “We feel Brooks’ leadership and experience will greatly enhance our defense for years to come. Brooks plays tough minutes against the opposition’s best players.”
Also Tuesday, the Capitals signed former Hurricanes goaltender Justin Peters to a two-year deal and re-signed center Michael Latta to a two-year deal.
