Two of Moscow’s major airports are banning all airline passengers from carting liquids, gels and aerosol containers in carry-on baggage, a security measure aimed at protecting Russia from a terrorist attack during the Sochi Olympics.
The Moscow Times reported Thursday that the bans are in place at Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports.
Sheremetyevo officials said on the airport’s website that the liquid ban applies to even prescription medicines and baby formula and food, NBC News reported. And Vnukovo officials said medicine could come aboard in carry-on bags, but only if the passenger could provide an official doctor’s statement, The Moscow Times reported.
Meanwhile, airports in Sochi, St. Petersburg and Moscow’s Domodedovo announced passengers could cart liquid with them so long as the amounts were less than 100 milliliters, NBC said.
A direct flight from New York to Sheremetyevo takes more than 10 hours, NBC said.
The rules will stay in effect until March 21.
