Hollywood’s Leonardo DiCaprio recounted this week how he was nearly eaten by a great white shark while filming the 2006 film, “Blue Diamond.”

Mr. DiCaprio described the shark as “gigantic” and the experience as “terrifying,” during a recent appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show.

“They actually said in 30 years, this has never happened,” Mr. DiCaprio said, in the interview, during which he described an underseas scene that nearly went awry. “But the tuna kind of got stuck on the top of the cage and the great white kind of leapt out and tried to bite it and it went into the cage with me and half its body was in and out and I flattened down at the bottom and it chomped a few times.”

Mr. DiCaprio added the obvious: “But I survived.”

Still, he said, in the interview, it was “absolutely terrifying.”
