One of New York City’s mayoral transition team has received a thumbs-up award from a communist group, citing her “extraordinary story” as a significant inspiration.

Zakiyah Ansari is advocacy director for the Alliance for Quality Education, and a member of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s transition team, The Blaze reported. And she also received an award from the communist group, People’s World, at the Dec. 8 “Better World Awards” gathering.

The group detailed her honor on its website: “From humble beginnings to advocacy director … to member of the new mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio’s transition team. … Zakiyah was one of two New York City Coalition for Educational Justice parent leaders appointed to the City Council Task Force on Middle Schools. The task force led to recommendations adopted by the NYC Department of Education and the Campaign for Middle School Success. As a result, more than $30 million has gone to some of the lowest-performing middle-grade schools to support school improvement efforts.”

The group’s communist bent isn’t hidden. It spouts on its website its goal to “popularize the ideas of Marxism and Bill of Rights socialism” and claims to have a “special relationship with the Communist Party USA.”
