CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is urging state lawmakers to support his call for more audits of state agencies and departments.
Morrisey sent a letter to House Speaker Tim Miley on Thursday, asking members of the Legislature to join his call to revamp the auditing process.
The Republican attorney general is urging lawmakers to institute additional audits amid controversy over a $5 million state Department of Agriculture loan program. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is investigating the program’s alleged mismanagement of money.
Democratic legislative leaders including Miley have questioned the need for more audits.
Morrisey’s letter asks legislative leaders to undertake audits of every major state agency and office, overhaul the auditing process and embrace interagency cooperation.
