DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers have avoided arbitration with Alex Avila by agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with their No. 1 catcher.

The Tigers announced the agreement on Friday night.

Avila had a .227 batting average with 11 homers and 47 RBIs last season, hitting .303 after the All-Star break.

He has a .254 career average with 51 homers and 222 RBIs over 492 games and five seasons with the Tigers.

Avila’s best season was 2011 when he was on the All-Star team and finished the season with a .295 average, 19 homers and 82 RBIs in 141 games - all career highs - in his second full year in the major leagues.
