WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Purdue University is privatizing its printing services division after cutting a majority of those jobs last year.
Purdue said Xerox will handle on-campus printing under a five-year agreement, with the 16 remaining printing services employees accepting on-campus jobs with the company that are guaranteed for six months, the Journal & Courier reported (https://on.jconline.com/1nqBtjl ).
The outsourcing move is similar to steps that Purdue President Mitch Daniels took when he was Indiana governor.
The decision comes after university officials said the printing services operated at a deficit of about $800,000 in 2013. The school laid off about 70 percent of the division’s 48 employees in April 2013 and closed three printing centers.
“This move follows a strategic analysis and campus wide review of our printing services operations. As you know, operating expenses have outpaced revenue for several years,” said Rob Wynkoop, managing director in the Office of the Executive Vice President for Business and Finance.
Purdue estimates it will save at least 10 percent on printing costs with the change.
“It will be a full-service print shop,” Wynkoop told the newspaper. “There will be opportunities to look at things from a digital perspective. We should see different ways of doing course packets and more modern technological approaches.”
