CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Alcohol officers in Mecklenburg County will offer free cab rides home for those who drink too much.

The Charlotte Observer reported (https://bit.ly/1fDcgN3) that Mecklenburg County ABC officers will patrol uptown Friday to reduce drinking and driving.

ABC board spokeswoman Mary Ward says the effort is a partnership between the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and local cab companies.

Ward says those with no safe transportation alternatives can ask ABC officers to call one of the cab companies offering the service to take the person home.

The cab company can submit a voucher to the ABC Board for reimbursement.

Ward says this is the third time in the past year the agency has sent officers uptown. The pilot project in August prompted 14 people to use the free ride home.
