A teacher in Maine was fired from her substitute art class role after she told the students they were stupid, the district superintendent said.
The teacher, whose name was not published in The Associated Press report, apparently made the remarks to the fourth-grade students at Vickery School in Pittsfield, Maine, last week. Superintendent Dominic DePatsy said the teacher was not a full-time staffer, but that she would no longer be contacted for substitute positions, AP reported.
The firing was to make sure all the students felt “safe and respected,” the superintendent said, in the report.
Several in the class reported the name-calling to their homeroom teacher, who in turn informed the principal, AP said.
Parent Leah May said her daughter told her the students were assigned a project and after some asked questions, the teacher said they were stupid, “ignorant” and “retarded,” AP said.
