OPINION:
Proposed federal regulations designed to close down “sheltered” workshops are outrageous (“R.I. to move disabled out of ’segregated’ workshops,” Web, Jan. 17). The majority of individuals who work in these facilities will not find jobs in private businesses because they cannot produce at expected levels.
These lost jobs will mean lost wages and spending power, and an increased reliance on public assistance. And that’s just the economic impact. Now, factor in human elements such as the loss of a sense of self-worth, sense of accomplishment and feelings of being able to contribute to society, as well as a lost sense of belonging.
There is a place for “sheltered” workshops for those who make the informed choice to work at them.
