HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York town supervisor thought to be a leading Republican candidate for an opening Congressional seat says she won’t seek to fill the spot.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray said Friday she’s committed to her job and is not a candidate for Congress.
Earlier this week Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said she’d seek the Democratic nomination to replace Long Island Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, who is retiring.
McCarthy said this month she’s not running for a 10th term and has been battling lung cancer. She’s endorsed Rice.
No Republican candidate has announced their candidacy. Political pundits say the race for the open congressional seat could be one to watch.
The Republican Congressional Campaign Committee has called the district a potential pickup for a strong Republican candidate.
