LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags be lowered at the state capitol complex to honor former Democratic state Rep. Gino Polidori of Dearborn.

The Republican governor said in his order that the flags should be lowered to half-staff on Friday and returned to full-staff on Saturday. The order also encourages state residents, businesses, schools, local governments and others to follow suit.

Snyder says Polidori, who died Sunday of cancer at his Dearborn home, was a “champion” for veterans’ rights. The 72-year-old was an Army veteran.

Polidori was Dearborn’s fire chief from 1973 to 1996. He later served seven years on the Dearborn City Council and three terms in the state House ending in 2010.

A funeral Mass is Friday morning at St. Barbara’s Parish in Dearborn.
