DERIDDER, La. (AP) - State police say a 29-year-old DeRidder man died after he shot himself in the chest and was simultaneously shot by police.
Sgt. James Anderson says the man, Lawrence D. Chavez, refused to comply with police, who had gone to his house after he was reported as suicidal in a 911 call made at 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Anderson says police, who had also received a report of a gunshot, asked Chavez to step outside the house when they arrived. But Chavez instead closed the door on them.
Anderson DeRidder officer found Chavez in a bedroom and ordered him to drop the weapon, but the man instead pointed the firearm at himself and pulled the trigger, which did not engage.
Anderson said Chavez was shot when he cycled another round into the gun.
